Grandparents’ Day at Bunscoil na Toirbhirte
Wednesday, 11th February was Grandparents' Day in Curraghagalla National School - an occasion when grandparents get an insight into 'a day in the life' of their grandchildren. Those who had visited before and those who were partaking in Grandparents' Day for the first time, were all made feel very welcome by helpful teaching staff.
An increasingly popular initiative, this event, which included Mass in the nearby church, is first and foremost a social one and the atmosphere last week was relaxed and informal. Grandfathers and grandmothers, were treated to refreshments having first touched base with their energetic grandchildren - all of whom are benefitting from their time in this busy and progressive centre of learning. A small rural school, pupils lack for nothing in terms of personal attention and first class facilities.
Not all grandparents live locally and for many, the visit involved travelling across counties and in some case provinces. The efforts of staff and the enthusiasm of students made the process very rewarding and there's no doubt the entire exercise was well worthwhile.
Having passed through the Irish primary school system themselves, today's grandparents fully appreciate the many positive changes that have made modern school-going more comfortable, more accessible and more inclusive than ever.
