Councillors ‘will go to war’ with Government, as State officials slammed the door shut on providing funding for the Fermoy weir project.
It had been mooted at a Fermoy Municipal District meeting that approaches should be made to the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment to help find funding for the estimated €4m build to restore the weir structure.
One key aspect of the project is a bypass channel for fish to traverse the weir in Fermoy and this had been strongly argued for by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
Councillors and council officials had spoken about the possibility of seeking funding from IFI, but when contacted by The Avondhu the department poured cold water on any likelihood that they would help.
