Geographer Anne Buttimer from Glenville who works in UCD, was in Florida this week accepting the Association of American Geographers 2014 Lifetime Achievement honours for five decades of distinguished work in the field of geography.

Throughout her career, Anne has made great strides in research, teaching and service and she has been at the forefront of international geographical activities. Even though she works in UCD, she still has relatives in Glenville and would visit regularly.

In January 2012, she was the first woman to be awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Grenoble in France. She also chaired a research network, funded by the EU, which looked at sustainable development and had a significant influence on EU policy debates.

Professor Buttimer has been the head of the UCD geography department for 12 years and, over the years, she has travelled the globe to give lectures at a range of institutions.
