Nora Geaney passed away in 2011 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was a keen golfer and was heavily involved in Castleisland Golf Club.

Now her son D J has teamed up with accountant friends Michael Sheehan from Glanworth and Eoin Landers from Cappoquin for a fundraising campaign aimed at remembering her while at the same time raising funds for charity.

The event is called the Swing4Cancer initiative and will see the 3 guys known as the ‘Pink Swingers’ race against the clock to play 32 golf holes in 32 golf courses in 32 counties on June 19 and 20, in 40 hours, a feat never before attempted. All funds raised will go to Breast Cancer Ireland. Glanworth man Michael Sheehan, says it’s a charity close to their hearts.

“This initiative has touched one of us personally and we wanted to do something to help fundraise. Hopefully people will support us en route around the country and donate. We have left no stone unturned in preparation of our almost 2,000km journey, capturing everything on any accountant's best tool – the reliable Excel spreadsheet – we have 21 minutes per golf hole – not including food or fuel stops, or traffic delays.”

Neither Michael or Eoin have been directly touched by cancer. They all met in college and lived together for a while so were around D J when his Mother was ill. Michael came up with this idea for D J, one which he immediately embraced.

The lads will be dressed in pink clothing supplied by Dwyer's & Co, and drive a pink Renault Captur from Keary's as they race against the clock to complete the 32 golf holes. Deloitte will be scoring partner associate for the event.

“From start to finish we’re estimating it will take about 40 hours, which includes the three hours’ sleep we will get the night of the 19th in Lisburn. As we have such a tight schedule, we will be ensuring that our cooler bag will be jam packed with high energy foods and long lasting carbohydrates that will have to do us for the weekend.”

All funds raised for Swing4Cancer will go directly to Breast Cancer Ireland and they have over €11,000 raised to date. Their efforts can be followed on Twitter @swing4cancer, use hash tag #swing4cancer and on Facebook and donate via idonate.ie/swing4cancer.
