Glanmire Community College’s Michael Carey, recently showcased a project entitled 'Is fearr rith maith ná drochsheasamh' at the Festival of Education in Learning and Teaching Excellence (FÉILTE), hosted in the RDS, Dublin. A project developed between the Physical Education Association of Ireland (Cork), Cork Education and Training Board, Cork City Council and Cork Sports Partnership, it led to the development of the Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge in 2013.
Saturday 4 October, saw over 800 teachers and members of the public come together to celebrate innovation in teaching and World Teachers’ Day 2014. Hosted by the Teaching Council, FÉILTE featured a mix of over 50 showcases and workshops spanning projects from across the school sector, demonstrating the innovation happening in teaching and learning in schools across the country.
The day commenced with a keynote address by broadcaster Ryan Tubridy, on the theme of Talking about teaching: tearing down the walls. The day also featured three panel discussions chaired by Matt Cooper, journalist and broadcaster, and a performance by the National Children's Choir.
While the panel discussions focused on the themes of well-being, the needs of newly qualified teachers and those of experienced teachers. The panel discussion on well-being featured contributions from musician Bressie, former Cork hurler Conor Cusack and Voice of Ireland presenter Eoghan McDermott, each of whom have spoken publically about their own personal journeys.
