Recently established up and coming horse trainer Gavin Hernon secured his first victory with his very first runner at Deauville when Icefinger lead his experienced rivals home last Saturday for owners BLC Horse Racing.

Having gained experience of training yards in Ireland, Chantilly, the USA and England, the Castletownroche native launched his career as a horse trainer in Chantilly, France describing the range of gallops in the region as ‘mind boggling’.

The youngest son of four to Joe and Mary Hernon of Castletown Stud, Gavin started out in the racing industry with Jim Bolger, spending four years there while studying international commerce with French at UCD in Dublin.

He had ambitions to be a jump jockey but admits it soon became apparent to everybody that this was not what nature intended.

Like every trainer, starting out securing horses and owners can be a tough task with a certain amount of luck required but with plenty of experience behind him, and a maiden victory under his belt, the future looks bright for Gavin and his team in France.
