Recent dumping in Galtee Woods, a popular walking route, has been slammed by local people, who have branded the illegal activities as 'disgusting', 'shocking', 'disgraceful' and as being in 'the pits of criminality', after photographs were posted on Facebook.

On the primary walking route, just over half a kilometer from the bridge on the Glen Road to King's Yard, several bags of rubbish, coal bags, animal feed bags and around 20 tyres were seen by walkers.

Mitchelstown historian and photographer, Bill Power, told The Avondhu that the total amount of dumped items would just about fill a trailer or the back of a four wheel drive.

"I was so annoyed. It's an area many people walk and is one of two routes through the wood used by people who visit King's Yard and climb Galtymore. I walk the wood quite a lot and it is very irritating to see the disregard people have for it," Bill said.

He added that many of his award winning nature photographs were captured near where the dumping took place and after he posted it to the Mitchelstown Facebook page, he made a formal complaint to Coillte. "It seems that many people think it's acceptable to dump rubbish in Galtee Wood. Throughout the wood, one can find all sorts of rubbish including nappies, tin cans, electrical items, old computers, even a fridge and a microwave," Bill concluded.
