As the news broke on Sunday that Mourneabbey girl Karen Buckley was missing in Glasgow, realisation began to dawn on the people of Galbally in South Limerick that Karen's mother was one of their own - Marian Ryan from Kyelogues.

"Karen's mother Marian (nee Ryan) was born here and she still has a brother living here. Karen’s granny Nora Ryan, also lives here," one resident told The Avondhu.

“We are devastated here in Galbally. You hear of cases like this happening so far away but when they happen so close to home, you reaslise what it means in terms of the worry, devastation and anxiousness caused to the person concerned and their families and friends.”

The tight knit community in Galbally will gather for a special Mass in the local church at 8pm tonight (Thursday) at which Canon Denis Talbot will officiate to pray for the safe return of Karen to her family and friends. Mass and prayers have also been celebrated in her native Mourneabbey.

The 24 year-old has not been seen since the early hours of Sunday morning in Glasgow, when she left her friends to go to the toilet in the night club they were attending.

It is intended that the Mass in Galbally will be an opportunity for neighbours and friends to support Karen and the Buckley family with their prayers through this worrying time. Canon Talbot has known the family for many years.

Ms Buckley, a qualified nurse, moved to Glasgow in February to study occupation therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University. Her parents Marian and John are currently there and appealed for information and her safe return at a news conference in the city. Their son and Karen’s brother Kieran, is traveling over from Australia to take part in the search.

As of going to press, police in Glasgow were searching sheds and a canal close to the apartment that she travelled to on Sunday morning. The search has also been extended to sites across the northwest of the city. Her handbag was found in the area of Dawsholm Park on Tuesday and there has been a good response from the public to appeals for help. Air support and sniffer dogs are also involved with efforts still being made to trace the driver of a silver or grey car whom police believe could assist them with their enquiries.
