Jingle bells - as Gaeilge - in February? Pupils from the two 4th classes in Gaelscoil de hÍde, Fermoy on Tuesday demonstrated how they raised funds at their school in December for the relief effort, following the devastating typhoon in the Philippines, by belting out a lively verse or two of the well known carol 'It's an early practice for next year!', guitar-playing teacher, Irene de Brun laughed.

On hand to collect their cheque for the proceeds of their carol singing which amounted to over €500, were local businessman Noel Barnes and his wife Juliet. Juliet comes from the Philippines. The couple's two children attend the school.

GREAT EFFORT

Noel and Juliet were involved in the relief effort in Fermoy following the typhoon, when a number of different fundraisers were run. They travelled to the Philippines over the Christmas holidays to oversee the distribution of financial aid and goods collected in Fermoy. The money was used to help fund house building and food programmes.

Noel and Juliet thanked the children and staff of the school for their support and generosity and pledged that the money received would be spent on projects to help families in the Philippines get back on their feet. "The money will go a long way towards helping to secure families," Juliet said.
