Great strides are being made in Castletownroche to promote Gaelic games. These efforts were recognised this week with the awarding of a 'Gradam Gaisce Flag' which is presented to national schools with a strong track record of participation in the national schools' GAA competition, Sciath na Scoil.

Special guest on Wednesday morning was Cork and Bride Rovers hurling star, Brian Murphy. Before raising the flag Brian said it was great to see such enthusiasm for hurling and football in a school that benefits from the expert coaching of Derek Noonan and Eddie Sheehan.

Also in attendance was Tom Barrett, chairman of Castletownroche GAA, who have an excellent working relationship with Castletownroche National School. The emphasis on Gaelic games in the school, allied to the work being done at underage level augurs well for the future of the GAA in Castletownroche.
