The future of Knocklong Credit Union is 'safe and secure' - this was the message from the new Mitchelstown Credit Union manager Dermot Long, as he was in the Knocklong branch on Friday last to celebrate their 30 year anniversary.

Last year, the future of the small credit union hung in the balance, as rumours circulated that the sub branch of Mitchelstown Credit Union was to be closed, but these have now been put to bed by the new manager who assured members and people from the community on Friday that the Knocklong branch has a long future ahead.

One of Mitchelstown Credit Union's founding and long standing board members, Michael McEldowney said that on behalf of the board, he was delighted to be celebrating 30 years of Knocklong Credit Union.

He said that he hopes that the credit union remains strong and continues to operate for at least another 30 years, while the first manager of Mitchelstown Credit Union, Micheal O h-Aonghusa reiterated those sentiments about a long and happy future, as he added that the rumours last year about possible closure were distressing.

"We appreciate the support we've had from the people in Knocklong and we will be here as long as the people of Knocklong want us here. Know that ye are very much part of the family of the credit union in Mitchelstown," the manager Dermot Long said.

He added that the future is 'safe and secure' and they are lending.

On the day to celebrate the 30 year anniversary, there was cake, which was cut by the original ten members and board members, celebrations and a free draw was also held.

In the free draw, John Elliot won an umbrella, while the following won hampers; Phyllis O'Carroll, Laura Harty, Sherry Ryan and Billy Power.
