Fuel spill at school dealt with by fire brigade

Mitchelstown Fire Brigade were called to deal with a leaking oil tank on Wednesday morning at a Mitchelstown school, as the fuel flowed onto the road, causing what could potentially have been a serious situation.

Firefighters, assisted by gardai, went to the facility at Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, following a call shortly after 9am.

A brigade spokesman confirmed to The Avondhu that they used a, ‘oil dry agent’, which has the appearance of sand.

“This is spread on the spillage and then it can be shovelled up and disposed of safely. There was no risk there and the only concern was that it could have flowed into drains. The oil tank was also secured.”
