Four men from Lismore recently undertook a grueling overnight cycle from Donegal to Co Waterford, all in aid of St Carthages House in Lismore.
Alan Landers, a Lismore native, came up with the idea of the cycle as he wanted to raise money for the home which, due to the economic downturn and recent cutbacks, was in much need of financial support. The 'crazy cycle' was officially launched at St Carthages by special guest and Lismore native, Patrick Buckley - a recent medal winner at the Special Olympics. The more the feat was termed to be 'insane', the more determined Alan and his cohorts became and so, there was no going back!
Following 12 weeks of intense training, Alan, joined by Davey Nugent, Mikey Whelan and Mark Whelan, with a back-up team of four and two vans kindly donated by Thomas Hyland and Mark Landers, left Letterkenny at 5pm on Saturday 26th of July to begin the 400km long journey back to their home town.
After cycling through counties Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon, Westmeath, Offaly, Tipperary and Waterford, the group reached Lismore at 2.30pm the following day, just in time for the open day at St Carthages House.
Upon their arrival the four men received a huge welcome from familiy, friends and members of the local community, who were all present at the finish line to congratulate the group for completing the journey and raising funds for this amazing cause.
And, if you have not had a chance to support this outstanding achievement, you cn still do so.
Please forward any contributions to St Cartages House - remember, every penny counts!
