Robert Jon McCarthy, who cycled with Fermoy Cycling Club in his early teens, is celebrating his team’s win at the An Post Rás 2017 last weekend.

Robert’s team-mate on the UK-based JLT Condor team, James Gullen, was crowned champion at the 8-day, 1,199km international event. JLT Condor have celebrated four wins at the Rás in previous years.

“We’re really happy,” Robert said. Although the 23-year-old has been a stage winner at the Rás in previous years, and did well in the opening stages, team considerations trumped personal ambition and he finished in 139th place in the final stage of the race.

“Once James took the yellow jersey, all our personal ambitions got set to one side,” he said.
