The six-classroom extension of Watergrasshill National School has now been fully completed, and both students and staff are settling into their new workplace. Along with the six classrooms, the new school facilities include a library, a multi-purpose hall, a new autistic classroom, an astro-turf play-area and a courtyard.

The board of management were given the green light by Cork County Council in July 2013, and since then the construction work on the school has been on-going. Four prefabs and a container store were removed from the site as the extension was added.

The design of the extension means that the school will be rectangular-shaped, with a courtyard area within the building. School principal Pat O’Brien said that predominantly, this space will be used by the infant classes.

“It’s very secure so it’s perfect for the infants. There will be seating going into it and yard games going down on the ground there as well. It’s protected from the elements really and it’s a lovely enclosed space.”

Enrolment in September will reach 320 in the school, with all 12 mainstream classrooms being utilised.
