In anticipation of the 4th annual Kilbehenny Potato Festival, the first potato seeds were sown in the Kilbehenny Community Garden last Saturday.

The festival, which celebrates the humble spud, will take place in August and it will this year coincide with The Gathering.

A huge crowd turned out to see how the planting was done, as all hands on deck were needed to plant the 24 long drills of British Queens and Kerr's Pink.

Benny the Scarecrow is also being measured up for a new outfit and will take his place in the community garden over the coming weeks.

Once the potatoes are picked, they will be sold and all funds raised will go towards the new community centre and other projects ongoing in the village.

Plans are currently underway for the festival programme, which will include delicious food, music and dance and traditional machinery and implements related to potatoes in days gone by.

The Potato Festival Committee would like to thank Ned Condon and Martin Russell for the use of the field, Pat O'Connor, Liam Kelly, Mike Moloney and Denny Fitzgerald for supplying the machinery, Joe Prendergast for organising the certified seed potatoes, Tom Conway for planting the potatoes with his vintage David Brown tractor and planter and Patsy and Pat Dalton who brought the tea afterwards.

There are also some certified Kerr's Pink seed potatoes that were left over for sale and anyone interested can contact Moss Fitzgerald on 087-8214991.
