Fermoy man Joe Davis went to the rescue of a young woman who collapsed close to the social welfare office in Fermoy on Tuesday. It's understood the woman may have suffered some type of seizure.

"I immobilised her head, put her in and out of the recovery position as necessary and then handed over to paramedics when the ambulance arrived," Joe, who happened to be passing at the time, explained.

"I doubt the heat helped," Joe said. As a first aider he found it alarming to see the number of people not drinking water or taking other precautions this week as temperatures rose into the high 20s. "The heat is potentially very dangerous and I think people forget that on the rare occasions that it happens in Ireland, he said. "Abroad we slap on sunblock and drink fluids," he pointed out, saying that we don't appear to be as vigilant when we are at home.

A timely warning then as the high temperatures are set to continue over the weekend.
