The final judging is now complete in the 'Fermoy A Cleaner Town' initiative organised and sponsored by the McCarthy Insurance Group. The independent judges have given their list to them ahead of the awards ceremony which will take place on Monday night next, July 22 in the Grand Hotel at 8pm. All are invited along to celebrate the town's achievements and congratulate the finalists.

"There has been a major improvement in the cigarette butt littering and a huge effort has been made all round by residents, clubs, organisations and businesses alike, so much so that the judge have asked that we make a number of extra awards," Paul Kavanagh of the McCarthy Insurance Group told The Avondhu. They've obliged by coming up with extra categories such as 'large shop fronts', 'highly commended' and 'most improved premises'.

"The whole idea behind 'Fermoy A Cleaner Town' is to assist the Tidy Towns committee's efforts to increase Fermoy's score in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) awards and also in the national Tidy Towns competition and to this end we believe this has been achieved," Charlie McCarthy explained, adding: "It's important that we all keep up the good work done over the rest of the summer and into next year. We will have a stronger platform to work from in 2014."

The top three in each category have been written to. The overall winners will be presented with customised wall plaques in recognition of their efforts. "Not everyone can be a winner but the real winners are the people of Fermoy who now have a cleaner town to enjoy," Charlie McCarthy pointed out.

The identity of the winners is known only to the independent judges and the results await announcement in sealed envelope's in the sponsor's safe until the prize giving on Monday night when 20 awards will be presented.
