Come out, get dirty and give back at Lough Curra Stile

By Lisa O’Donnell
Business owners in Fermoy have been feeling a general sense of relief after the road works at Courthouse Road were completed and two traffic has once again opened on O'Neill Crowley Quay.
Over the past month or so, the road works on Courthouse Road which were part of the flood relief system, caused huge traffic congestion and tailbacks in the town, with traders claiming that it was having a major effect on their businesses. Now that the works have ended, businesses owners are extremely happy that the disruption has come to an end.
The new road is flanked by an attractive stone wall and a new footpath has also been installed.
Tom Bryan of Toss Bryan’s admitted that the works did have a negative effect on his business, as temporary traffic lights blocked the entrance to the premises at times.
“We definitely suffered and would have lost customers and turnover,” he told The Avondhu.
However, he has described the new road as ‘fantastic’ and praised Lagan Contractors for keeping them informed of progress at all stages of the works.
“We knew we would suffer and that the last week would be especially tough, but it had to be done,” Tom said. “We are not at all angry or anything, just relieved that it's over.”
Colm Donnellan, manager of Riordan’s SuperValu, also said that while the works had a ‘big affect’ on business, they understood that it was necessary.
“There is certainly a better road, and we are now starting to see people coming back who had not been in the shop during the works,” he said.
While there is still some work to be completed on O’Neill Crowley Quay and Ashe Quay, two-way traffic has been restored at O'Neill Crowley Quay and this, coupled with the Courthouse Road situation has had a very noticeable and positive effect on traffic flow throughout the town.
