Work is to begin on installing new playground equipment in Fermoy town park in January and will take around six weeks, the recent meeting of Fermoy Town Council was told.
Mayor Olive Corcoran, who chairs the town park sub-committee of the town council, raised the matter, asking for a progress report. Councillor John Murphy welcomed the news saying it was a positive step for the town and will be a good start to the new year.
INCIDENT
No mention was made of the recent unsettling incident in the playground involving a man who brought his two young children to play there. The man and his three-year-old daughter became covered in human faeces after coming into contact with the playground slide. Following the episode, which disgusted townspeople and was loudly condemned, the mayor signalled her intention to call for CCTV to be installed there. Cllr. Noel McCarthy also said at the time that CCTV was needed to stop such incidents. It was surprising then that the matter wasn't mentioned by any of the councillors at the meeting.
Following The Avondhu's front page report of the horrific incident, the story was taken up by the national media, reported on radio and in the national press.
