Mayor of Fermoy, Cllr Olive Corcoran isn’t pleased with how the refurbishment of the town park playground was carried out. While the new look playground is being used, Cllr Corcoran believes the refurbishment was ‘an opportunity lost’ and made her feelings plain at last Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council.
“No one can argue that the what we have now isn’t smaller, it most certainly is a good deal smaller. We also have less equipment and a lot of the equipment that is there isn’t suitable for older children,” she observed.
Town Clerk, Pauline Moriarty defended the €57,000 refurbishment pointing out that the contract had been awarded to a reputable contractor and that councillors had been kept up to date on the project’s various stages.

Cllr Noel Barnes was sympathetic to Cllr Corcoran’s observations and suggested that perhaps additional and more suitable equipment be purchased. She also received support from Cllr Seamus Coleman.
Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan who was heavily involved in the provision of a playground in the Clancy Street area of the town said that when it came to this type of amenity, you didn’t always get what you wanted and he pointed to insurance concerns as a reason why certain play equipment couldn’t be provided.
