A protest march against the introduction of the controversial water charges is planned for Fermoy this Saturday, November 1.

Rallies are taking place all over the county and country against Irish Water – a similar march is taking place in Mallow at the same time. Recently, upwards of 1,000 people marched through Patrick Street in Cork city in protest to the charges.

According to calculations by the Commission for Energy Regulations, a family consisting of two adults and two children are estimated to have to pay €278 per annum.

Further to this, many of the Irish public have been left outraged at the high call-out fees that Irish Water apply for repairing suspected leaks. They charge €188 for the first hour, and €94 an hour thereafter. Out-of-hours calls are higher still, at €282 for the first hour and €141 thereafter.

One of the organisers of the local protest, Pat Conroy, said they are assembling at 2pm on November 1 at Chapel Hill near St Patrick’s Church and walking to Pearse Square in the centre of Fermoy.

It is hoped that a band or lone piper will accompany the march, which will be followed by speeches.
