On Saturday last, November 7th, twenty nine swimmers representing Fermoy Swimming Club, took part in the Munster Grade C Gala.
Although the swimmers had the advantage of home territory, the Gala was huge and extremely tough as the stroke judges were taking no prisoners. Fermoy swimmers did their coaches proud having the least disqualifications out of the 12 teams competing.
Especially impressive, as the following swimmers were competing for the very first time: Liam O’Brien, David Noonan, Darren Counihan, Gearoid Carey, Oisin Morrison, Lisa Harrington, Nefelia Pyrovolaki, Izzy Bates, Maeve Callanan, Ciara Clancy and Emily Darrer-Dalton.
Well done to all those swimmers who swam so well and amazingly Liam O’Brien achieved his B time in the 100m F/C. Cillian Fitzgerald won bronze in the 50 B/C and now has 2 x B Times. Hannah Salvatori won bronze in the 100m F/C, silver in the 50m Butterfly and Backstroke. Orla Kenneally achieved her B Time in 50m Butterfly.
There was a clean sweep in the Boys F/C with Liam O’Brien winning gold, David Noonan (silver) and Darren Counihan taking bronze.
The girls won gold in the Medley Relay and the boys silver and Fermoy were positioned 3rd in the Cannon Relay.
John Lonergan, Darragh Gill, William Verling, Liam Óg Hegarty, Rory Newell, Emma Forrester, Emma O’Grady, Niamh Clancy, Gemma O’Brien, Ailbhe Ryan all swam well knocking off seconds in order to get closer to their goal of Munster Grade B Times.
For five swimmers to achieve this goal so early in the season is a credit to the efforts of the swimmers and their coaches (Jackie Power and Paula Finn) so well done to the following who are now officially Munster Grade B swimmers: Ruby Coffey; Clodagh O’Brien - silver in 50m B/C; Leah Fitzgerald – silver in 50m Butterfly; Marc Callanan – silver in 50m B/B, silver in 50m Breaststroke Anna O’Keeffe – gold 50m Breaststroke.
A big thank you goes to all the people who helped on the day organising a very successful day and Coach Jackie Power.
