The recently established Fermoy Steppers Walking Group will feature in the latest episode of RTÉ’s Operation Transformation tonight (Thursday).

The walking group, through Grace Batterberry, initially videoed a short piece about Fermoy Steppers and sent it into RTÉ in the hope they would film the group for Operation Transformation.

Film crews from RTÉ were in Fermoy for two hours last Saturday with over 30 members of Fermoy Steppers, where well-known presenter Kathryn Thomas spoke with a number of those involved in the group.

The crew filmed the walkers warming up and walking on the new-look Ashe Quay along the River Blackwater as well as in Fermoy Town Park.

Ms Thomas interviewed those involved in setting up the walking group – Sarah Irwin, Maura O’Leary and Jacinta McCormack – as well as three members of Fermoy Steppers – Craig Roche, PJ O’Leary and Breda McCarthy – in relation to their experiences with the group.

Fermoy Steppers Walking Group are up and running with over four weeks, with more than 220 people registered. They walk four times a week (Monday at 10am, Wednesday at 7pm, Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 11.30am), and meet in the courtyard of the Resource Centre on MacCurtain Street.

The group are now up to 4km walks and will be taking part in the 5km Operation Transformation walk in Blarney on Saturday, February 21. Sarah Magner of Magner’s Pharmacy, Fermoy, organises the weekly weigh-in and keeps the members on track with the ‘Know Your Numbers’ campaign.
