Fermoy Soccer Club was given a civic welcome by the Town Council on Wednesday night. The event was to mark the great strides the club has made in recent years.

2012 was a real watershed year for the club when they managed to get teams to the Munster junior and senior leagues.

The decision by Fermoy Town Council last April not to grant the club a civic reception caused controversy. It’s understood a two-thirds majority is needed when the decision to host civic receptions is put to a vote. The vote is a secret one so it’s not known what members weren’t in favour of the idea at the time.

In any event, many tributes, led by Mayor Michael Hanley, were paid to the club and its members on the progress and success achieved by them at the civic welcome on Wednesday night. As the event was occurring at the time of going to press, a full report and photographs will be carried in next week’s edition.
