Fermoy Musical Society is eschewing the old reliables this year in favour of a lesser known (but no less fabulous) show.

‘Crazy For You’ is a musical comedy featuring the music of the incomparable George and Ira Gershwin. It features some of their best songs such as ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘But Not for Me’ and ‘Embraceable You’ among others.

Set in the 1930s, it’s the story of a stage-struck New York playboy forced to enter the family banking business who falls in love with the daughter of a theatre owner he’s supposed to foreclose on. Bobby sets about saving the theatre instead, how else, but by staging a fabulous show.

The high energy show features lively dance numbers, plenty of comedic moments and plot twists and, of course, some romance.

The cast, with 12 principal members and a chorus of 30, is presently being put through its paces by choreographer Deirdre Long and one of Ireland’s most respected directors of musical theatre, Bryan Flynn. Bryan was recently feted at a prestigious event held in Cork Opera House which saw performers from all over the world join together to stage a show in his honour.

Featuring excerpts from a number of well known musicals, such as Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver, West Side Story and more, it proved a fitting tribute to someone who’s made such a huge contribution to musical theatre.

Fermoy Musical Society members consider themselves lucky to have someone of Bryan’s calibre directing their production and believe people are in for a real treat.

The show will be staged from Sunday, April 21 for six nights, excluding Wednesday night. Showtime will be 8pm nightly in the Community Youth Centre. The booking office will also operate from the Youth Centre this year.

Fermoy Musical Society has been delivering quality musical productions for the entertainment and enjoyment of legions of people over the years and members are excited at the prospect and the challenge of bringing this less well known show to the stage this year.
