For the second year in a row, Fermoy Medical Hall has been listed as a finalist in the prestigious Retail Excellence Ireland Awards.

The awards night will take place this Saturday in the Radisson Blu in Galway, hosted by Hector Ó hEochagáin. The awards promote and recognise standards of excellence and innovation in retail.

The Fermoy store has been nominated in the 2,500-5,000sq.ft category, along with five other stores, three from Dublin, and one each from Wexford, Belfast and Antrim. This is their third nomination since opening nine years ago.

Overall 30 stores of various sizes have been nominated. As part of the selection process, all entrants were visited by a mystery shopper and were assessed by a qualified store assessor. The Board of Retail Excellence Ireland, based on these reports, as well as a review of video recording evidence, photographic evidence and a financial submission, selects the winning stores.

Co-owner of Fermoy Medical Hall, Brian Whelan said it is an honour for the store to be nominated once again.

“We were in the top six again last year, and we’re the only shop from the top six last year to be in it again this year, so we’re really hoping that we can win it this year. It’s a nationwide award so hundreds and hundreds of shops around the country have entered, so it’s great to get here.”

He added: “We’ve good staff here at the minute, really good people. The first stage of the award is based on customer service; we got 100% in that. That was from a mystery shopper so we don’t know who it was, we still don’t even know who served the customer.”

David Fitzsimons, CEO of Retail Excellence Ireland, congratulated the retailers who were selected.

“They are exemplars of the retail industry. Their success shows what can be achieved from an application of a strategic vision for retail in Ireland. All have been selected as finalists because they have shown a constant commitment to excellence in meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

“The Irish shopping experience continues to match the best that retail can offer around the world. We believe that these stores are well placed to capitalise on a positive Christmas season,” Mr Fitzsimons stated.
