The name of the Fermoy Family Coordinating Group has now been changed to the Fermoy Community Network to make the service more recognisable and relevant for the public.

Brendan Scahill, HSE community worker and the current facilitator with the network, told The Avondhu that for the year ahead, they hope to develop a website for the network, which will show the resources and activities in Fermoy, particularly those supporting families.

"The network is a group of individuals and representatives from community and voluntary groups in the Fermoy area who meet regularly to discuss and address issues relevant to supporting families in the area. The group is now twenty years on the go and has had many benefits and successes over the years," Brendan explained.

Earlier this year, they ran the Friendship Week and Fermoy Against Bullying Week in March and the network wish to thank everyone who took part and made the week one to remember.

"We hope that it has led to fostering friendship in the community and raising awareness around bullying and how to address it. Imelda O'Donovan of Youthreach and a network member said that we hope to build on this for next year and put together a similar week’s activities in 2014," Brendan told The Avondhu.

As a follow up to the Friendship Week, a workshop for parents and professionals was also organised to help people to work with children and challenging behaviour, facilitated by play therapist Edel Lawlor.

Since this event the network has run two parenting courses, one in the evening and the other during the morning.

"We always aim to deliver courses that meet the needs of parents. These two courses were well attended and we are hoping to run more next year. The Adult Education service in Fermoy have secured Fergus Heffernan to run a ‘Managing Your Life by Managing your mind’ course in Fermoy which we are encouraging as many to participate as possible, as it was a huge success in Mitchelstown over the past six months," Brendan added.
