Friday last was Culture Night, an occasion when voluntary groups and organisations are encouraged to sing, dance, perform or generally express themselves creatively.
Fermoy usually comes good for this annual Cork County Council sponsored event and locally the public were treated to a recital by members of the Thomas Kent Pipe Band followed by a poetry reading in The Wagon Tavern.
Councillors Noel McCarthy, Tadhg O'Donovan and John Murphy were on hand to lend their support to the event and they posed for photographs following the band's display outside the band's parish centre (CM&WS Hall) headquarters. Cllr Murphy said the performance 'gave everyone a lift'.
"People like John Fant have been the backbone of the Thomas Kent Pipe Band for years," he said. "These individuals are completely dedicated; the pipers and drummers sounded magnificent this evening and I heartily congratulate them for keeping a great tradition going for so long" he said.
Later on, a core group of poetry aficionados attended a reading in The Wagon Tavern. Some of the invited poets included Fred Johnston, Miceal Kearney, John W Sexton and and Eileen Sheehan.
