The annual Fermoy Corpus Christi procession took place last Saturday evening after the 7.30 evening Mass. The event was blessed with a balmy summer evening, hopefully the herald of many more to come.

The procession was very well attended with the Fermoy church Choir, Fermoy Concert Band and a guard of honour provided by Fermoy Scouts. This is one of the longest established traditions in the history of the town. Along the route people decorate their houses and the Town Park is always looking resplendent for the occasion.

Many of the paintings displayed in people’s windows were the work of a very talented Fermoy man, the late Mr Maurice Mannix, a former teacher at St Colman’s College.

People of a certain age will recall the processions of the 1940s and 1950s when the day would be so hot, that the tar would be melting on the road. At that time, the altar was set up in Pearse Square under the town clock. The host was borne into the park by Fermoy parish administrator, Reverend Father Casey, assisted by Reverend Father O Hehir. The benediction and blessing took place from the bandstand.

The boys and girls from local schools who recently made their First Holy Communion, all looked resplendent, a great credit to themselves, their parents and their teachers. Father Casey thanked everyone who had helped to make the annual procession such a very special even and he had a special word of praise for all the First Holy Communion children.

Can any praise be too high for those who look after our jewel in the crown, Fermoy Town Park, the ideal setting for the procession? Well done to all.
