The community hospital in Fermoy was connected up to the new water main in recent days, bringing to an end a litany of interruptions in supply over recent years caused by the old and leaky main and consequent headaches for staff trying to manage whenever there was a break.

The work was incorporated into the OPW's programme of flood relief works and done by Lagan Construction while they were working on drainage on the Courthouse Road as part of the flood scheme.

This week local councillors Noel McCarthy and Tadhg O'Donovan welcomed the move. "At last, after two years of campaigning and lobbying, we are delighted the new supply has been connected. It will ensure the hospital has a regular water supply which we've been advocating and which is obviously essential for a hospital," Cllr O'Donovan said.

Cllr McCarthy agreed, pointing out there'd be other benefactors too as they were now on the same new line, incuding residents in Clondulane, local businesses, residents and farmers. "They would have  been cut off when there was a break in the line but if there's a break now it won't affect them," Cllr McCarthy explained. It was difficult having to live with that for many years, he said. "Obviously there may be a few teething problems but long term it'll be of great benefit. We're delighted it has materialised," Cllr O'Donovan added.
