Fermoy CYMS host Cross X snooker competition
Saturday August 17th saw the return of big-time snooker to Fermoy, the Cross X Tournament, with the top players in the country competing for the Michael Hickey Cup as well as a prize fund of €1,500. This is a 32 man invitation-only event starting with first-round matches at 9am on the Saturday morning, with three matches in each session at intervals of one and a half hours.
Play continued during the day until approximately 9pm, at which time the eight quarter-finalists were known. On the Sunday morning the quarter finals took place at 9am and 11am, with the semi-finals pencilled in for 2pm and the grand final at 5pm.
Admission to all the games was free and David Joyce, secretary of CYMS encouraged the general public to come and watch some of the top snooker players in Ireland in action.
Five Fermoy players, Tom Aherne, Alan Cleary, Daithi Whelan, John Dorgan and Mick, competed, providing stiff opposition for players of the calibre of Michael Judge, who is the current Irish champion, and many more international players.
There is a long and rich history of snooker in Fermoy with players from the CMYS going on to compete at national and international level - in the 1980s a Fermoy team comprised of John Short, Robbie Donovan, Peter McCarthy, Martin Sargent and Sammy Cashman won the Munster Team Championship. Other players such as Tom Aherne, Derek Murphy, Ryan Conway, John Murphy, Mark Pyne, Daithi Whelan and Don Pyne have all represented the club at county and Munster level.
This prestigious Tournament was not possible without the very generous help of the following: Tom Aherne, The Wagon Tavern, the main sponsor; Brian Enright, Albert’s Bar, the Highest Break sponsor; John and Shane, Mace Cork Road, refreshments sponsor and Dan, The Forge Bar refreshments sponsor.
