Fermoy business relieved footpath is to be repaired

Funding is currently being sought but it’ll probably be January before the work starts – welcome news however for one Fermoy business with the footpath outside the business set for repairs.

One business premises in MacCurtain Street in Fermoy have even more reason than most to celebrate the news that a section of footpath is to be repaired.

It's the section of pavement right outside Charlie Macs pub that is in urgent need of repairs. It's been acknowledged by the council that the work needs to be done. Funding is currently being sought but it'll probably be January before the work starts as the council is conscious of the need not to cause disruption or difficulty to footfall along the busy section in the run up to Christmas.

Abdelillah and Linda Mounir of Charlie Macs, are relieved that the footpath is to finally be repaired. It's difficult enough trading in the present climate, they say, without the negative of having a footpath in such poor condition right outside their door that people have to negotiate to get to them.

That said, the couple have just completed a very successful first year in business. With the help of chef Fred Desormeaux, Charlie Macs has built up an excellent reputation for its food. The French chef, formerly of Green's Restaurant in Cork city, put together an impressive menu that has won the premises many customers for lunchtime and evening dining.

Their food has also garnered a number of very positive write-ups including from renowned food writer Georgina Campbell, who was particularly complimentary about Fred's unique take on seafood chowder. "Not exactly pub grub as it has been known in Fermoy to date" is what she said about other dishes on the menu and Fred's use of locally sourced ingredients.

Compliments have also been paid to the establishment via Trip Advisor. Nor is it just the premises' food that has won it new customers. The hostelry has become a popular meeting and socialising venue thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. That new footpath outside the door, come January, will be an added bonus.
