Minister Seán Sherlock paid a visit to St Joseph’s National School, Fermoy recently to discuss the European Union and the benefits of membership, with pupils engaged in the Blue Star Programme.

Pupils there have been very busy in the past few weeks involving themselves in this programme, the aim being to foster better knowledge and understanding of the European Union and how it affects our lives amongst Irish primary pupils, through classroom projects and activities. The type of projects the pupils at St. Joseph’s have begun work on include research on: the foundation and development of the European Union; the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe; the role of the EU: what the European Union does and how its work affects the lives of European citizens.

ENGAGING EVENT

“Our pupils will also hold a Europe Day event, where the school community will showcase and celebrate its achievements throughout the year,” said Geraldine Burke, deputy principal.

“Pupils were delighted last Monday to welcome Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Seán Sherlock T.D., to our school to impart his knowledge and perspective on the E.U. on 27 eager 5th and 6th class pupils. In a town hall type debate, Seán was blitzed with questions for a very engaging and pleasant hour. All parties thoroughly enjoyed the experience and everyone finished the session with a little more knowledge and respect for the work our politicians do for us, both home and abroad.”

Minister Sherlock said afterwards that he was “delighted to take part in the debate”.

“Their knowledge of the European scene and the mechanisms therein was impressive. I wish them the very best in the Blue Star Programme and I would encourage other schools to get involved also in the initiative,” he concluded.
