The eminent Irish poet, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, visited St. Colman’s College, Fermoy recently to address the students and discuss her craft.

Although born in England of Irish parents, she moved to Ireland at the age of five and was brought up in the Dingle Gaeltacht and in Nenagh, County Tipperary. Having studied English and Irish at UCC, she became part of the 'Innti' school of poets.

Since publishing her first collection of poetry in Irish in 1980, Nuala went on to create children’s plays, screenplays, anthologies, articles, reviews and essays, many winning international awards. She is also a regular broadcaster on Irish radio and television.

POSSIBLE RETURN

Nuala currently has some of her poetry on the Leaving Certificate curriculum, including the humourous poem ‘Mo Ghrá-sa (IdirLúibíní)' which she spoke of in St Colman's. She also talked about the Irish language, its historical background, its challenges and its future. Nuala received many questions from students, was satisfied to answer them and declared that she was so impressed with her visit, she would love to return again next year.
