Local election candidate for Fianna Fail in the Cahir/Clonmel area, PJ English, is urging people to shop local and support their local businesses. The Clogheen candidate is backing the 'Shop Local Saturday' campaign, which is aimed at encouraging people to support local businesses and community groups in the run up to Easter.

The campaign, which was started by Ógra Fianna Fáil, is a nationwide campaign highlighting the importance of supporting local businesses, to help towns and cities recover from the recession.

PJ told The Avondhu that Easter Saturday, April 19, is one of the busiest shopping days of the year and he is encouraging people to shop in their nearby towns of Clonmel and Cahir.

"Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have suffered considerably during the downturn, especially as a result of the growing dominance of large multi-national retailers across Ireland in recent years. SME's will drive the recovery in Ireland and they need to be supported.

“The recovery of the economy here cannot happen if people are not aware of the importance that shopping local will have in aiding our recovery. ‘Shop Local Saturday’ will highlight this and it will get people thinking about shopping local," the candidate told The Avondhu.

He added that when people support local businesses, they are helping to create and sustain local jobs. "The message is that these businesses are the heartbeat of our communities and we must do more to support them.

“If every SME in Ireland were to hire just one more employee, we would virtually solve our job crisis overnight. This dream can become a reality if we support our local businesses in the run-up to Easter," the local election candidate stressed.
