An elderly man was robbed in broad daylight in Mitchelstown on Thursday last, as he prepared to do his shopping in Tesco.

The 81-year-old man, who is from the locality, was in the supermarket car park around noon when he was approached by a woman he described to gardai as a middle-aged female, of strong build and whom he believed to be a foreign national. The woman asked if he had change for a trolley.

He told gardai he was conscious of the woman brushing off him several times as he attempted to get the change she'd asked for. When she went away he found that he'd had all of his money stolen. He was left distressed and upset by the incident.

The trolley scam was operated a number of times throughout the country last year at supermarkets and was highlighted by gardai and the media in an attempt to warn shoppers. A variation on it was people in cars being approached in the car parks of supermarkets and again being asked if they had change of a €2 coin for a trolley.

They would then drop the coin onto the floor of the car and use the opportunity when the motorist bent down to retrieve it, to steal handbags and wallets and make off with them.

In light of the incident last Thursday, gardai this week renewed their warning to people to be extremely careful if approached in such a way.
