The county intermediate hurling championship round three game with Pallasgreen was played in Hospital on Friday evening last, 2nd August. A Blackrock draw or win would see them top the group and gain a quarter-final place and this was the result, as they maintained their unbeaten run in a well contested game, which ended in a draw – Blackrock 1-17 Pallasgreen 3-11.
Blackrock lined out without two of their selected team on the match programme, David Moloney (injured) and Richard McCarty did not start and were replaced by Brian Moloney and Sean Palmer. It was Pallasgreen who were the early pace-setters and raced they into an early four point lead. Blackrock got on top as the game progressed and were back on level terms, with points from Richard Murphy, two 65s, Paudie Leahy one from a free and play. Blackrock went into the lead with a well taken point from centre forward Brendan Hennessy.
Pallasgreen had the first of their three goals, just as a very heavy rain shower descended on proceedings. A pointed free from Paudie Leahy reduced the deficit to the minimum before Ruairi O’Shaughnessy scored a Blackrock goal. Pallasgreen replied with a point followed by a goal. Paudie Leahy pointed for Blackrock to leave the minimum between the sides at the interval – Pallasgreen 2-05 Blackrock 1-07.
Blackrock opened the scoring on the resumption with a point from Paudie Leahy. Pallasgreen restored their lead with a point from outfield. Both sides exchanged points, Kevin Palmer the Blackrock scorer from play and Richard Murphy pointed a 65 to level the scores once again after twelve minutes of play in the second half. Pallasgreen replied with a goal and a point. Three unanswered points for Blackrock from Paudie Leahy, one from a free, and Ruairi O’Shaughnessy, had the minimum between the sides. Paudie Leahy had the sides level with a pointed a free, which was followed by two points in succession from Ruairi O’Shaughnessy.
However, late points in injury time for Pallasgreen tied up the game, Blackrock 1-17 Pallasgreen 3-11.
Blackrock team and scorers: Declan Danaher, Don O’Flaherty Richard Murphy, Thomas Clifford, Niall Moloney, Brian Moloney, Dylan Dawson, Thomas Casey, Simon Hennessy, David O’Flaherty, Brendan Hennessy, Kevin Palmer, Paudie Leahy, Ruairi O’Shaughnessy, Sean Palmer. Subs: Barry O’Shaughnessy for David O’Flaherty, Ian O’Brien for S. Palmer.
In the quarter-final game, Blackrock will meet Kileedy on a date and venue to be fixed.
