Doneraile’s Michael Quirke scored a big win in the 2016 Leinster Seniors’ Amateur Open Championship, held at Glasson Golf Club near Athlone in Westmeath last week.
Michael, a member of Doneraile Golf Club, finished one under par over two days and 36 holes to finish three shots ahead of his nearest challenger.
Speaking to The Avondhu, Michael said he finished his first round with even par 73 in joint first place alongside two other golfers, before he achieved one of only two under-par rounds of the tournament on day two to claim the title.
Playing off a one handicap, Michael said the strong wind conditions made play difficult over the two days.
Michael’s final round included two birdies, the first of them coming at the par 3 fifth and the second at the par 5 10th hole. Around 140 golfers from all around the country as well as from abroad, competed in the annual event.
Barry O’Leary from Greystones finished in 2nd place, ahead of John Mitchell from Tramore in third.
