In a rain-soaked Rathcormac last Sunday morning we became unstuck against a Castlelyons side in the division 2 league final. Having had 8 wins from 8 games in the league format, expectations were high. Both teams had experienced the lowest moment of their season the weekend but it didn’t look that way as this game was played at championship pace and intensity, despite the weather conditions.

Fermoy began the game the better with points from Tomas Clancy and David Geary setting Fermoy off before Alan O’Connor rattled the net. The remainder of the half was nip and tuck with the Fermoy defence impressing, especially Jeff Daly at full back and sweeper John Ring who was replacing the injured Mark Flynn. The sides went in level at 1-5 to 8 points with Fermoy the happier side having played into the wind.

Fermoy roared into the second half with 3 consecutive points from Padraig De Roiste, Brian O’Sullivan and a beauty from David Geary. Castlelyons’s big guns then came into the game more and more and they goaled with ten minutes remaining, despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Conor Quinn. Castlelyons ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11.

It has been a magnificent year for everyone involved in this panel. Losing only 2 competitive games out of the 13 played as well as claiming some high profile scalps in challenge games, is a feat in itself. Hopefully next year we can go one further in the championship and hold our own with the big boys in Division 1 of the league.

Team: Conor Quinn, Alan Baragry, Jeff Daly, James O’Sullivan, Peter Murphy, Darragh O’Carroll, Martin Brennan, Kieran Morrison, Brian O’Sullivan, Jack Hutchings, Tomas Clancy, Alan O’Connor, John Ring, Paidi Shanahan and David Geary.

Division 4 Football Final

This Saturday in Watergrasshill we face Ballinora in the final of the league having recorded 8 out of 9 wins in league format over the course of the year. Despite the disappointing loss to Grenagh, it has been a successful year on the football side, gaining promotion in the league and the county championship run of the U21s. Hopefully, one more win before the season finishes.
