Avondhu area memories from December 1992
A self-styled 'bottom up' organisation that started in 2008 is hoping to expand its valuable service providing solace to those who are suicidal.
It's stating the obvious to say that to date, Ireland as a society has struggled to meet the needs of those who feel that taking their own life is the only option open to them. Very regrettably, every community, village and town has had to deal with the grim reality of suicide and while this is traumatic ,it pales into insignificance when compared with the pain that endures among family members following a suicide.
Talking about doing something is one thing, putting in place structures designed to intervene in a crisis situation is entirely different. 'Diadhuit' (God Bless You) is such an organisation.
An exploratory meeting with a view to setting up a network in Fermoy took place in The Resource Centre on Wednesday, 4th December. It was reasonably well attended, insightful and constructive. The meeting was told how 'Diadhuit' receives referrals from GPs who in turn put vulnerable individuals in touch with professional counsellors. While the consultation is free to those in need, finance is required to keep the service operational and it's hoped to organise some fundraising events in the near future.
'Diadhuit' is a registered charity that strives to keep overheads to a minimum, it places considerable emphasis on being grounded in local communities and has a 'bottom up' philosophy. Its website address is www.diadhuit.ie and anyone who wishes to make contact can do so by e-mailing enquires@diadhuit.ie.
Upcoming fundraiser in Cheers
Members of the public who are supportive of the 'Diadhuit' model are encouraged to support a fundraising table quiz in Cheers Bar, Fermoy on Thursday night 12th December - everyone welcome.
