Concerns have surfaced once again over the condition of the derelict 59 Club on Patrick Street, Fermoy.

Cllr Noel McCarthy recently indicated his intention to raise the issue with officials from Cork County Council at an upcoming meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District.

Cllr McCarthy informed The Avondhu, that he has been contacted on several occasions by residents of the town who are worried that the building may be unsafe.

“People have been getting in touch about it, and recently an engineer called me to express his own concerns about the safety of the building,” the councillor said.

Continuing, he confirmed that he would ask Council officials to look into the matter: “We need to know if the 59 Club is safe enough. We need to know if the Council has done enough to ensure that the building is safe,” explained Cllr McCarthy.

In February 2020, Cork County Council erected barriers around the building and signs asking pedestrians to walk on the opposite footpath.

At that time, a spokesperson for the Council said that it had cordoned off the footpath ‘in the interests of public safety and in anticipation of repairs to the building facade’.
