The ongoing delay of the Fethard/Burncourt Water Treatment Scheme is a sign of the gross mismanagement of the project by the Department of the Environment and is simply 'intolerable', according to Independent TD Mattie McGrath who had sought confirmation of the exact status of the Scheme through a Parliamentary Question.

“The reply from Minister Phil Hogan is effectively a very polite way of telling us that it is not his problem anymore so go away and stop annoying me. Through the bewildering levels of delays that his Department has overseen in relation to Fethard/Burncourt we are now in a position where responsibility for the delivery of water services capital infrastructure is now in the hands of Irish Water.

"He has informed me that Irish Water is only now preparing a Capital Investment Plan for 2014 – 2016 that will provide for the transition of projects included in the 2010 - 2013 Water Services Investment Programme, which Fethard/Burncourt was included under. This is intolerable. It means further excessive delays which could have been altogether avoided if the Minister and the Department had acted to expedite this matter with more concern for the residents than they have shown to date.”

Deputy McGrath feels it is clearly the case that the Minister now believes that he has all the political cover he needs for his own ineptitude because he can simply pawn off the problem to Irish Water.

"To allow the work on this important project to fall in to the hands of a semi-state body that is mired in controversy is an act of political irresponsibility that I will continue to call the Minister to account for,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
