A spokesperson for the New School Action Group at Gaelscoil de hÍde, Fermoy, following last Thursday's ‘Frozen in Time’ protest said 'the deafening silence of our politicians sums up their approach to the new school issue'.

“Despite the protest getting extensive national and local media coverage on television, radio and newspapers, we have no had not so much as an e-mail from any of our elected TD’s,” the spokesperson said.

“Their silence has been both shocking and appalling and is indicative of their general apathy in relation to this topic despite claims to the contrary.”

Concluding, the statement warns: "If the Minister for Education and Government TD’s in this constituency think we are going away, then we have news for them – we're not!"

Since this statement was issued however, Minister of State, Seán Sherlock, has urged the school to 'keep up their campaign'.

In a statement to The Avondhu he said: “They are getting their new school. I held a meeting with Jan O'Sullivan (Tuesday) on this issue and I want to urge the school to keep up their campaign, which has been great. Their voice is being heard at the highest level of Government.

“There seems to be a disconnect between the Board of Management and the School Community. The Board of Management has been communicated to by Minister Jan O'Sullivan herself. Given that I have delivered funding for Colaiste an Craoibhinn, St Joseph’s National School, St Colman’s and Grange National School, I would ask that the people of Fermoy would put their trust in me and have faith that this project will be delivered.”

He added: “The people of Fermoy should also know that I am in direct contact with the Bishop of Cloyne and I have assured him, as Patron, that the school will be delivered.”
