Major drainage works on the Courthouse Road in Fermoy will begin on Tuesday, March 19. At the same time the long-awaited replacement of a section of faulty water main is being done.

It was decided to replace a much longer length of water main, a 915 metre stretch, instead of the originally proposed 300 metre section, when funding was sanctioned for a more comprehensive repair job.

The drainage works are part of the flood relief scheme. Traffic disruption will be unavoidable while the combined works are ongoing. It’s expected to last six to eight weeks. It’s hoped to put a stop/go system in place, rather than close down one of the town’s main arteries.

The area affected will be from the Richmond Hill junction at Patrick Street down past the community hospital on the Tallow Road. Both jobs are being carried out by Lagan Construction. The repair of the water main will be welcome, given the repeated outages caused by breaks over the past year. Again last week the community hospital was left without supply because of a break.
