The advantages of being able to connect with people around the world at the touch of a button is invaluable in many ways and now, iMedia being so much part of our lives, we wonder what would we do without the world wide web, Google, Twitter, Facebook and all the other facilities at our disposal. However, as with most things that are good and positive, the bad and negative element runs with it hand in glove.

This week we read where one of our staff was subjected to abuse, completely unprovoked and totally unwarranted.

While the abuse on this occasion came in just a short sentence of five or six words, one is left to ponder why anyone would wish to subject another person, someone they may never even have met, to this kind of pressure.

Knowing the strength of character that our colleague possesses, we can be sure in the knowledge that she will deal with this and move on, but had the recipient been someone of a more fragile nature, then God alone knows where it might lead to.

Incidentally, this Tuesday was 'Safer Internet Day' where post-primary students attempt to address cyber bullying in their local communities!
