Increase of 1,428 jobs in Limerick hospitality sector shows Government initiatives working – O’Donovan
An assurance has been given by Cork County Council that the footpaths in Sarsfield Casey Drive in Mitchelstown are to be fixed in late Summer/Autumn and the works on the approved 2014 Footpath Programme across the areas of Fermoy, Glanworth and Mitchelstown will be completed by mid November.
This was the assurance given to The Avondhu this week by senior executive engineer Brendan O'Gorman.
Sinn Féin Cllr June Murphy had campaigned for the footpaths in this estate to be prioritised and told The Avondhu that she is delighted that the works will take place before the winter sets in.
"It will come as a huge relief to all residents of the area and all those who visit there. The works will mean that mothers will no longer have to wheel their buggies onto the road and that children can run freely without the fear of falling over one of the many cracks and holes.
"The footpaths were in an awful condition and while their upgrade is long overdue, I would like to take the opportunity to thank local council engineer Brendan O'Gorman for pulling out the stops to get the work done before the end of the year," she said.
She added that with budgets being cut, councils are being faced with the impossible task of choosing one job over another.
"All council budgets have been, and continue to be, slashed and the council employees are faced with a desperate situation of having to make decisions on what work will be done. Local council employees and representatives are being put in an impossible situation with the continuing cuts being imposed on them by Central Government," the Sinn Féin Cllr argued.
As part of the 2014 Footpath Programme, almost €80,000 was allocated for footpaths in Mitchelstown, Fermoy and Glanworth. These are: outside Charlie Macs pub and the Kilcrumper-Pike Road in Fermoy, Chapel Hill in Glanworth and Church Street, Ballinwillin, Brigown, Mulberry, Sarsfield Casey Drive and Captain Keane's Grove in Mitchelstown.
All of the works have to be completed by the middle of November.
