Over the course of just six hours on Wednesday, January 15, the Livinghealth Gym in Mitchelstown was alive with the sound of music, as crowds of people took part in a day of Zumba in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
Organised by outgoing gym manager Shona Hanrahan, she said that she was overwhelmed by the response on the day and by people's generosity, as they donated €1,500 to the Irish Cancer Society.
Throughout the day, Shona ran twelve half hour Zumba slots and there were people in and out all day supporting the good cause.
"A lot of people had read about the Zumba day through The Avondhu and because of the cause, many wanted to play their part and I think it made a huge difference when they knew that all of the money was going to the Irish Cancer Society.
"Unfortunately, cancer is something which has affected many families in the local area," Shona explained.
Throughout the day, many people came in and took part in the classes, including Dr Gaffney from the Livinghealth Clinic, while many others who couldn't make it in gave a contribution. Shona also thanked the clinic for their generous contribution towards the good cause.
Shona has been working as manager in the Livinghealth Gym for five years and her last day last week was an emotional one, as she said that in the gym, the clients 'are like family' to her. She found it hard to say goodbye and leave the days of the Livinghealth Gym behind her, but she is now looking forward to the next chapter of her life, as she will be emigrating to Italy with her husband.
"I want to thank everyone who supported me over the years and the Zumba day was just something I could do for the town," Shona said.
