Cork Rebel Week bit of a non-event in Fermoy

Despite being a designated town for the initiative, Cork Rebel Week was a bit of a non-event in Fermoy. The best efforts of a committee set up to organise activities around the marching band element of the festival came to naught when the band supposed to be coming to the town from the UK was slow to confirm. In the end Fermoy did have two bands - the Tallaght Youth Band representing Ireland and the Fermoy Concert Band representing the town.

The Cork 'visa' initiative, designed as a fundraiser for Cork University Hospital, didn't go ahead in the town either. Transition Year students at Coláiste an Chraoibhín did however hold a 'red day' in aid of the hospital.

Fermoy's most successful participation in the event came from Avondhu Tourism who picked up the baton and did the town proud by showcasing all it has to offer in terms of tourism, heritage and amenities at a stand in Cork at the weekend.

It was felt that the Fermoy stand more than ably competed with others representing Mallow, Skibereen, Youghal, Kinsale and Cobh in demonstrating what the town had to offer. Special credit is given by Avondhu Tourism to Mary Colette Sheehan from Rathcormac, who came up with the concept for the stand, which demonstrated a sense of place, representing the Blackwater with fishing, walking and leisure exhibits. There were several rolling videos too, showing the beauty of the Blackwter and Avondhu areas as well as river activities.

Representing Fermoy on the day were Ian Fleming, Sean Lomasney, Cliona Kearney, Mary Sheehan, Christine Allen, Shane Fleming, Heather Fleming and Donal O'Lochlainn. Abbeyville House and the Grand Hotel had a presence throughout the day on the stand. Bill Power and George O'Keefe provided material for the stand. Videos of it can be seen on YouTube by searching under Fermoy Rebel Week.
