31 Centra stores in Cork have helped raise over €700,000 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer programme. The original target of €400,000 was smashed, with a campaign that saw communities in Cork and nationwide pounding the pavements, donning pink vests and ‘painting it pink’ for a disease that affects over 2,800 women in Ireland every year.
Along with over 190 stores nationwide, Cork Centra retailers, including Herlihy’s Centra, Fermoy; Ross’ Centra, Watergrasshill and O'Mahony’s Centra, Mallow, joined forces to rally their local town and villages to come together for the ‘Let’s Walk’ initiative raising over €215,000 in total. Over 9,800 participants collectively walked through villages, towns and cities around Ireland to help drive awareness of breast cancer and raise badly needed funds. In Cork alone the walks raised over €53,000 and over 1,700 participants took to the streets.
As well as the walks, Centra sold nearly 44,000 of their limited edition pink reflective vest and 1,100 of their special rose gift box raising an additional €74,200. The pink hi-vis vest, which sold out nationwide, made sure that you were both stylish and protected during the dark winter mornings and evenings, perfect for walkers, runners and cyclists.
Money raised by Centra has gone directly to the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer programme.
Commenting on the funds announcement John McCormack, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Cancer Society, said “Centra have been supporting the Society for the last five years and we sincerely appreciate the work of all these stores and employees across Ireland. Each year they sell pink products, organise the pink walks and help to raise awareness of breast cancer in their communities. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in Ireland and we would not be able to provide the free nationwide support services that we do without the considerable support that Centra offer us.”
